University of Michigan, Art + Architecture Building Addition
This "on the boards" addition to the University of Michigan's School of Architecture and Planning acts like a laboratory for students to understand a building's many functions while its dramatic studio spaces above the existing research bays provide a new "front door" for the school. The expansion adds studio space, crit space and offices, as well as research space, classrooms, and a reading library.

Housed in the high-bay shop areas and outdoor workspaces is a highly respected research and technology program, where research continues in energy conservation, lighting design, and construction. The crit spaces within the double glazed windows provide a space for testing and researching various building design techniques. Sections of the wall fold up or flip out to control temperature, air flow and connection to the outdoors. Various shading elements are also available for students to test.

All of these spaces needed more capacity, yet the client wanted to preserve the adjacencies that gave the school its dynamic, creative atmosphere. The original 1973 building houses crit spaces for all student levels directly adjacent to the studios, which are noisy, active, crowded areas that greatly enliven the unique feel of the school. Professors' offices, located near the studios, are easily accessible by students. The new addition is accessed through a glass walkway from the current building.
