Cascadia Wetlands Interpretive Center
Located at the north entrance to the campus of Cascadia Community College and the University of Washington Bothell lies one of the largest and most successful restored urban wetlands in the region: the Cascadia Wetlands Interpretive Center. It seeks to advance needed innovations in the management of land, air, and water to serve as a model of sustainability. A combination of educational, interpretive and recreational programs will increase awareness of both the wetlands and the trail system, and serves to strengthen the clear links between healthy ecosystems and vibrant human systems. There will be dedicated spaces for undergraduate and graduate coursework—including independent studies—to foster research on wetland ecology. Hands-on wetland experimentation and exploration opportunities will inspire visiting K-12 students, professionals and the community. Interpretive exhibits will depict site history, native flora and fauna, and illustrate the importance and function of wetlands. The project will exceed LEED Platinum and the 2030 Challenge criteria by adopting the Living Building Challenge as a benchmark.
