The Open Window School
Bellevue, WA
|
In creating a new home for a growing private elementary school, Miller|Hull
developed the master plan and building facilities for the new Open Window
School pre-k through 8th grade campus.
The campus consists of 35,000 sf of administrative classroom and support uses
including a gymnasium with stage, a library, a computer lab, lunchroom, music,
art and science rooms. The 7.62 acre site includes a protected wetlands, native
growth protection area, a soccer field, play areas and parking.
Located on a spectacular site on Cougar Mountain, the school will command
sweeping views of the Puget lowlands. Such a unique setting has led Miller|Hull
to focus on two traditional strengths emphasizing the relationship between building
and landscape, and practicing environmentally progressive design. Both the
construction of the buildings and the utilization of the land around them are,
in this way, seen as an extension of the school’s educational mission.
In developing these concepts, Miller|Hull worked closely with a committee of parents,
teachers, and administrators. The process included input from both parents and
teachers in face-to-face sessions and through questionnaires.
