Olympic College
Poulsbo, Washington
|
This remote branch campus for Olympic College is carefully sited within a Kitsap peninsula
forest. Donation of the twenty-acre parcel in Poulsbo helped ensure the realization of this
facility to serve the residents of Poulsbo and surrounding communities with a much-needed
resource for higher-education.
The 40,000 SF self-contained building includes classrooms, laboratory, writing and computer labs,
distance-learning classrooms, auditorium, faculty offices, and student-support areas including a
study lounge, student commons, cafeteria and bookstore. Close interface between the building
and the wooded landscape is maintained via the primary entry plaza, pedestrian spine, open
terraces, and outdoor amphitheater.
The design process included close civic interaction through forums with community advisory groups,
city planners, community leaders, and local transportation officials. The durable building materials
and dramatic forms evoke images of the region's heritage while remaining true to its modern expression.
