This $4.2 million project designed by The Miller|Hull Partnership
in association with McAdoo, Malcolm & Yoeul, is located on the ship
canal between Ballard and Fremont. The facility houses laboratories
and office space for 50 scientists and technicians. Adjacent to
the lab is a landscaped area, which provides a waterside park for
the residents of Queen Anne Hill and views from the offices and
labs. The building's expression incorporates a contemporary industrial
aesthetic, responding to a neighborhood of boat sheds and light
manufacturing warehouses. The north facade of the building projects
into the ship canal, creating spectacular views of the water traffic
from the office and conference areas. All of the lab spaces connect
directly to a three story mechanical core allowing modifications
to be easily made within the labs. The 29,000 sf laboratory received
a 1986 Seattle Chapter AIA Honor Award and a People's Choice Award.
The building also received a national Lab of the Year award in 1988
from The Research& Development Association, and was subsequently
published in Research & Development Magazine. Miller|Hull is currently
designing a 6,000 sf administrative addition which will provide
more lab space within the original building.
