This single story building houses 6,000 square feet of classrooms,
a student cafeteria/lounge and a library area. The concept for the
project was to develop a modular, industrial building which reflects
Ballard's industrial community. Each classroom/shop module has typical
industrial steel structural elements, exposed ductwork, multipane
industrial windows and corrugated metal siding. All spaces are accessed
from a covered open air circulation deck along the south elevation.
The project is based on the comprehensive master plan for the site,
prepared in 1980 by The Miller|Hull Partnership. That document recommended
a new building and established site development goals including
two new piers, a new main bulkhead, and utility and parking improvements.
A principal concept of the master plan was the preservation of an
existing lagoon within the site. Site development improvements were
completed in 1982 as Phase One.
